Indexed universal life — IUL for short — is one of those products that sounds complicated until somebody sits down and walks you through it line by line. That's what Senior Select does. Jamie Kentle takes the time to explain how these policies work, who they tend to suit, who they don't, and what the fine print really means before you sign anything.
What an IUL Actually Is
An indexed universal life policy is permanent life insurance with a cash value component attached to it. The death benefit is the part most people understand right away: money goes to the people you name when you're gone. The cash value side is where the questions start.
With an IUL, the growth of that cash value is tied to the performance of a market index rather than a fixed interest rate. There are usually caps on how much it can credit in a good year and a floor that protects it in a bad one. There are also costs — insurance charges, administrative fees, and rules about how much you can put in and take out. None of that is hidden, but it isn't always explained well, and that's the part we slow down on.
An IUL isn't the right fit for everybody. If it isn't right for you, we'll say so.
Turning 65, Retiring, or Rethinking a Policy You've Had for Years
Most people don't call about an IUL out of nowhere. Something changed. Here are the situations we hear about most:
- You're approaching 65 and sorting out Medicare, and life insurance came up in the same conversation.
- You're retiring soon and the group life policy from work is about to end.
- You've had a whole life or term policy for twenty years and honestly can't remember what's in it.
- A term policy is coming to the end of its level period and the renewal quote was a shock.
- You want to leave something behind for a spouse, a child, or a grandchild, and you want it handled properly.
- Someone pitched you an IUL already and you'd like a second opinion from someone who isn't standing to gain from the first one.
Any of those is a fine reason to pick up the phone. So is simple curiosity.
What We Look At Together
Before anyone talks about products, we talk about you. What does your household look like? Who depends on your income, and for how long? What are you already paying for coverage you may have forgotten about? Are there health considerations that affect what you'd qualify for?
From there we can look at whether an indexed universal life policy fits, or whether a simpler, cheaper option would serve you better. Sometimes the answer is that the coverage you already own is fine and you should keep it. We'd rather tell you that than sell you something you don't need.
If an IUL does make sense, we go through the illustration with you — the projected values, the guaranteed column, the assumptions behind the numbers, and what happens if you stop paying premiums down the road. You should walk away able to explain your own policy to your family. That's the standard.
