What Whole Life Actually Is

Whole life is the plain version of life insurance. You pay a premium, the premium stays the same, and the policy stays in force for the rest of your life as long as it's paid. There's no end date to outlive and no renewal where the price jumps. That's the whole appeal — it's the kind of coverage you set up once and then stop thinking about.

The other piece people ask about is cash value. A portion of what you pay builds up inside the policy over the years, and that value belongs to you. It grows slowly and steadily. It isn't an investment account and shouldn't be sold to you as one, but it's real money sitting inside the policy, and it's one of the reasons whole life costs more per month than a term policy covering the same amount.

When someone at Senior Select walks you through a whole life policy, the goal is that you can explain it back in your own words. If you can't, we haven't done our part yet.

Turning 65, Retiring, or Rethinking a Policy You've Had for Years

Most people don't go looking for whole life insurance for seniors out of nowhere. Something prompts it. A term policy from decades back is about to expire, or has already, and the renewal quote is startling. A spouse passed and the bills that followed were an education nobody wanted. Retirement is close enough to start doing arithmetic on what happens to the surviving spouse's income. Or the grown kids brought it up over a holiday and it stuck.

These are the conversations we have most often:

  • A term policy is ending and you want something that won't expire on you again
  • You want final expenses covered so your family isn't writing checks during a hard week
  • You've been paying on an old policy for years and genuinely don't know what it does anymore
  • You want to leave a specific amount to a specific person, cleanly, without it getting tangled up
  • You were declined somewhere else, or assume you'd be, and want to know where you actually stand
  • You're comparing whole life against a burial or final expense policy and want the honest difference

Some of those end with a policy. Some end with us telling you the coverage you already have is fine and you should keep it. Both are good outcomes.

How the Conversation Goes

It starts with you talking and Jamie listening. Who depends on you, what you're already paying for, what you want handled after you're gone, and what the monthly number can realistically be. Nothing gets recommended until that's clear.

From there we look at what's available to you at your age and health, and we go through it in ordinary language — what the premium is, what it pays out, what builds up inside it, and what the health questions look like. Some whole life policies are issued with only a few questions. Some ask for more. Some have a waiting period in the first couple of years before the full benefit applies, and if that's true of a policy we're discussing, you'll hear it from us before you hear it from a brochure.

We're not here to talk you into anything. If a policy doesn't fit your budget or your situation, we say so and we move on.

And the work doesn't end at the signature. Beneficiaries change. Addresses change. Questions come up in year three that never occurred to you in year one. You call, you get Jamie, you get an answer.

Talk It Over With Jamie

Senior Select is Jamie Kentle, and the first conversation costs nothing but the time it takes. Come with questions. Come with the old policy you found in a drawer and can't make sense of. Come with nothing but a rough idea that you ought to get this sorted before another year goes by — that's a perfectly good place to start.

Reach Jamie at (870) 794-5991 or email insuredbyjamiekentle@gmail.com and we'll find a time to sit down with it properly.

Frequently Asked

How is whole life different from term life?

Term life covers you for a set number of years and then ends. Whole life stays in force for your entire life as long as premiums are paid, the premium doesn't go up, and it builds cash value over time. That permanence is why it costs more per month for the same benefit amount.

Can I get whole life insurance in my seventies?

Often, yes. Availability and pricing depend on your age and health, and the amount of coverage you can get is usually smaller than it would have been at fifty. Jamie can tell you what's realistically available to you before you fill anything out.

Do I have to take a medical exam?

It depends on the policy. Some whole life plans are issued based on a handful of health questions with no exam at all. Others ask for more. We'll tell you which type we're discussing up front so there are no surprises.

What is cash value and can I use it?

Cash value is the amount that accumulates inside the policy as you pay premiums. It grows gradually and belongs to you, and depending on the policy it can be borrowed against or accessed. Borrowing against it affects the death benefit, so it's worth walking through the specifics before you count on it.

What happens if I stop paying the premium?

That depends on how long the policy has been in force and how much cash value has built. Some policies lapse, some have options to keep a reduced amount of coverage in place. If money gets tight, call Jamie before you stop paying — there are usually more options than people realize.

I already have a policy I don't understand. Can you look at it?

Yes. Bring it or email it over. Jamie will read through it and explain what it actually does in plain English, whether or not it leads to anything else.
